Whale Rescue Burleigh Heads
Out taking some morning photo’s, when I notice a baby whale caught in the Shark nets off Burleigh Heads. I rang the police who get the Queensland Primary Industries and Fisheries who are in charge of the net to start the rescue. The men and woman from the Fisheries and Sea World did a fantastic job in freeing the entangled baby whale. They where two very large whales (the mother and escort???) swimming around the baby and staying very close while the rescue was performed. (by a very experience whale rescue team) ....."The sooner we know that we have an entanglement, the better chance we have of a successful release," he said.

www.goldcoast.com.au/article/2009/10/13/147631_gold-coast...
Queensland Shark Control Program Manager Tony Ham said public assistance was needed with reporting suspected entanglements.
"Anyone who sees a whale or other marine life entangled in shark control equipment can call the 24-hour hotline on 1800 806 891.

"With a significant increase in the whale population - approximately 12,000 now migrating each season - entanglements are anticipated at this time of year as the population makes its journey back to southern waters," Mr Ham said.

Including today's entanglement, since 2000 28 whales have been caught in shark control equipment in Queensland.

Of these entanglements, 25 whales have been successfully released...Congratulation to all.........

Mountsberg Conservation Area Wetland, Campbellville, Ontario

Sorry I've been away for the last while. I'm back to my part-time job in the seasonal department at RONA for for a stretch, and I've also been working as a scorer for the Ontario Grade Ten Literacy Test. Scored about 3000 tests. All-in-all a pretty intense time. Karen and I are also looking after the grandkids a fair bit, now that the the good weather is here (sort of), and various kids' activities have started up again.

Haven't had time for photography; thus, this image picks up from where I left off in my Mountsberg set.

Will be around to see you all ASAP, but It'll likely take a bit.

From "Mountsberg Conservation Area"
www.hrca.on.ca/ShowCategory.cfm?subCatID=1088
The extensive wetlands of the Mountsberg Conservation Area are a birdwatcher’s paradise. Waterfowl and shorebirds clamber about a misty lake while hundreds of warblers flit through forest and meadow. Nature surrounds you at this scenic conservation area that has great hiking and cross-country ski trails outfitted with boardwalks, birdfeeders and interpretive lookouts. You can even take in that first taste of spring on a horse drawn wagon ride in the Mountsberg Sugar Bush where maple syrup, pancakes and sweet sugar candy create indelible family memories.

You can even come face to face with a great horned owl. browse the exhibit gallery or gift shop, or see a live bird presentation during a year-round program with many special events. The call of the wild awaits you at this exciting conservation area!

ENGLISH
Berguedà is a comarca (county) in the interior of Catalonia, Spain, lying partly in the Pyrenees and partly in Catalonia's Depressió Central.

Currently, industrial activity is located mainly in between Berga and Puig-reig. The opening of the Cadí Tunnel and the general improvement of the roads in recent (as of 2004) years may improve the economic potential of the valley of Llobregat and of Berguedà in general.

Agriculture, cattle ranching and forestry have proved generally complementary to one another and compatible with tourism. The growth in tourism has provided some jobs and has been a key factor in reducing emigration from Alt Berguedà. Many farm houses have been converted (in whole or in part) to tourism-related uses.

CASTELLANO

Untitled

Description: Thomas Smillie was the Smithsonian's first photographer and curator of photography. He and his studio staff re-shot many of the photographs collected by the institution's scientists, including documentation of Smithsonian-sponsored expeditions as well as images of scientific phenomena.

Creator/Photographer: Thomas Smillie
Birth Date: 1843
Death Date: 1917

Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1843, Thomas William Smillie immigrated to the United States with his family when he five years old. After studying chemistry and medicine at Georgetown University, he took a job as a photographer at the Smithsonian Institution, where he stayed for nearly fifty years until his death in 1917. Smillie's duties and accomplishments at the Smithsonian were vast: he documented important events and research trips, photographed the museum's installations and specimens, created reproductions for use as printing illustrations, performed chemical experiments for Smithsonian scientific researchers, and later acted as the head and curator of the photography lab. Smillie's documentation of each Smithsonian exhibition and installation resulted in an informal record of all of the institution's art and artifacts. In 1913 Smillie mounted an exhibition on the history of photography to showcase the remarkable advancements that had been made in the field but which he feared had already been forgotten.

Medium: Cyanotype

Culture: American

Date: 1890

Repository: Smithsonian Institution Archives

Collection: Thomas Smillie Collection (Record Unit 95) - Thomas Smillie served as the first official photographer for the Smithsonian Institution from 1870 until his death in 1917. As head of the photography lab as well as its curator, he was responsible for photographing all of the exhibits, objects, and expeditions, leaving an informal record of early Smithsonian collections.

Belle Haven Raft of Birds

Raft full of birds on the Potomac River, off Belle Haven Marina, just south of Alexandria, Virginia. Most of them are Ring-billed Gulls (Larus delawarensis) but I see one Great Black-backed Gull (Larus marinus), a Double-crested Cormorant (Phalacrocorax auritus), and what looks like an American Crow (Corvus brachyrhynchos), though it would be cool if it was a Fish Crow (Corvus ossifragus). The plastic owl clearly isn't doing a very good job of frightening off the birds!

I know, I did a crappy job with the exposure settings for this shot. Oh well, adrenaline will do that to ya every now and then. I was shocked, however, at just how calm this deer was with my presence. I shot a whole series of pictures with this deer and never once felt like I was getting within his "comfort zone." Living in Montana I'm so used to preventing one of these animals from introducing himself to my truck bumper that I forget just how beautiful they are.

Took this while striding in Nara park. This is 猿澤池 in the beginning of Sanjodori. I like the color and historical mark of the rock. It becomes a footstone of the pigeons. Most of the pigeons come close enough to human beings taking a rest along with the pond side for food, but these 4 pigeons just like care nothing but their own targets. They choose not for a easy job, they stick to their will with determinant look. That's something we had lost for years of "civilization".

About time I figured out that I needed to convert my files' image profiles to sRGB! Too lazy to do this to all my photos. <__<

Can you believe this is ANOTHER concert pic? This was when my study abroad class went to a 蘇打綠 (Sodagreen) concert. Our program director (not sure what's her job title??) brings her dog EVERYWHERE by keeping it somewhat hidden in her purse. It's almost ridiculous how far they could go. In this case, the security guard at the Shanghai Gymnasium entrance simply laughed when he saw the dog.

Tack-sharp rabbit shot. Didn't even need any post-prod, just a crop job. They weren't kidding about the Tokina's sharpness below 300mm.

Fun fact: This rabbit was eating while it was running from me. Serious. It was watching me there, noticed the pile of leaves there, and then started chewing. Talk about ADD.

Subject: Brown-headed Nuthatch (Sitta pusilla; LC) and an Unidentified Little Brown Job
Camera: Kodak Z740
Date: 2011.12.31; A little overcast
Location: Talking Rock, Pickens County, Georgia, USA

Comment :: Finally get a blurry pic I can share of the Brown-headed Nuthatch because it is incidental to the actual bird I want to share.. Am currently looking for an identification of this female..

This particular UFB (unidentified flying bird) is a little bigger than your average LBJ and just slightly smaller than a female Rose-breasted Grosbeak.. She's a little flightier than the others when it comes to my presence, too.. Sunflowers, be it platform or nugget feeder provided, by far are her favorite eats..

This photo does a good job at expressing some of the mixed feelings over having animals in captivity. I appreciate the work of conservation and education that our zoos do, but sometimes you see these beautiful intelligent animals such as this gorilla and you can see in their face the sadness of captivity.
