Veggie Pride Parade 2010
animal rights
The 2010 Veggie Pride Parade marched out from, of course, the Meat Packing District toward Union Square for a rally to follow. Why a Veggie Pride Parade? To demonstrate an ethical and healthy life without consuming meat, of course. From their website veggieprideparade.org some of their goals:To set a positive example by standing proud and standing up for the vegan lifestyle. “To show our true love of animals, which must include farmed animals. To celebrate our healthy diet. To educate about the issues surrounding today's cruel, unsustainable, and exploitative meat-, egg-, and dairy-production systems. To encourage meat eaters—through advocacy and example—to join us in our compassionate way of living.”

While I am shooting and keeping my opinions to myself, the smell of roasting meat drifting from the surrounding restaurants was making my mouth water.

a woman's naked body made of the skins of murdered animals, put in a window to model a purse (also made of the skins of murdered animals) to real, living women who apparently aren't freaked out by this. i was. i'm apparently not their target audience.

i find it horrifically creepy.

ummmm
animal rights
this is a weird sign from an animal rights perspective -- on the one hand, it's cool they're advertising fleece and implying that it's as warm and cozy as wool -- that's much kinder to animals than promoting wool. but on the other hand, they're advertising it with this sort of joke image of this impossibly woolly sheep, who, please correct me if i'm wrong, looks like he's a merino, the most put-upon sheep of all, exploitation-wise and cruelty-wise. not so funny.

aaaanyway. it's an interesting one. saw this in a sporting goods shop's window in park slope, on 7th ave. near flatbush.

At this point in the walk I think the boys had already gotten tired of lugging the danged banner so it's a bit hard to read here. It says:

Theo Calf

Theo is a male Holstein calf. He was being raised by a family who wanted to slaughter him. He is from a dairy farm - calves are taken from their mothers after birth so milk can be sold for human consumption. Theodore busted into the neighbor's yard...lucky they didn't return him! They called animal control and Animal Place took him in!

Toward the end of the event everyone had just about had enough... including the photographer, who had taken to shooting all sorts of random objects! (After all, there's only so many photos you can take of a smallish demo!)

Bedford Animal Action staged a demo at Whipsnade Zoo near Dunstable on Easter Monday to mark Zoo Awareness Day.

Dead pigs at stockyard
animal rights
Quote from Lancaster Farming (October 27, 1990): "Death losses during transport are too high -- amounting to more than million per year. But it doesn't take a lot of imagination to figure out why we load as many hogs on a truck as we do. It's cheaper... Even with a zero death rate that might be associated with providing more space on the truck, the hogs we save would not be enough to pay for the increased transportation costs of hauling fewer hogs on a load."

Look what the UPS delivery person brought me today! Replacement Dandies (previously I was down to one bag and getting jumpy), Go Max Go bars (3 of each flavor - 2 for me, 1 for the Mr.; hey, at least I'm sharing!), and a shiny new animal rights tee from Mercy for Animals, all from Vegan Essentials. I forgot to order that DIY vegan marshmallow kit though, dammitall!
