NYC - Prospect Park Zoo: Barn Yard - Alpaca

The Alpaca (Vicugna pacos) is a domesticated species of South American camelid developed from the wild alpacas. It resembles a sheep in appearance, but is larger and has a long erect neck as well as coming in many colors, whereas sheep are generally bred to be white.

Alpacas are kept in herds that graze on the level heights of the Andes of Ecuador, southern Peru, northern Bolivia, and northern Chile at an altitude of 3500 to 5000 meters above sea-level, throughout the year. Alpacas are considerably smaller than llamas, and unlike them are not used as beasts of burden but are valued only for their fiber. Alpacas only have fleece fibers, not woolen fibers, used for making knitted and woven items much as sheeps wool is.

The Prospect Park Zoo, Brooklyn's only Zoo, is home to nearly 400 animals of more than 80 species. First established as a small menagerie in Prospect Park in the late 1800's, this collection of animals became the more formal Prospect Park Zoo on Flatbush Avenue that opened to the public on July 3, 1935. A Works Progress Administration (WPA) project, the Zoo was part of a massive city-wide park improvement program initiated and executed by former Parks Commissioner Robert Moses. Closed in 1988 for a five year, million dollar renovation program, the zoo was completely replaced save for the exteriors of the 1930's-era buildings. Rededicated on October 5, 1993, it joined Wildlife Conservation Society's (WCS) world-renowned network of wildlife parks in New York City.

The World of Animals in the southern quadrant of the zoo, features the Discovery Trail. The trail begins in the World of Animals building, but visitors quickly pass to an outdoor path that winds through the southern third of the zoo. Animals from diverse corners of the globe are shown in settings not unlike their natural habitats. Visitors may find along the trail Prairie Dogs, Kangaroos, Red Pandas, other animals. Signs often ask challenging questions, reinforcing presentations made in the Zoo's Discovery Center, or alert viewers to look for signs of animal habitation. Though it occupies a compact plot, The Discovery Trail has been carefully designed so that very little of the trail can be seen at one time, permitting visitors to concentrate on just the few exhibits at hand. The trail passes through marsh, open grassland, and wooded areas, featuring animals particular to each biota.

The grizzly bear, sometimes called the silvertip bear, is a powerful brownish-yellow bear that lives in the uplands of western North America. It has traditionally been treated as a subspecies, Ursus arctos horribilis, of the brown bear living in North America.

Grizzly bears reach weights of 400–1,500 pounds. Their coloring ranges widely across geographic areas, from blond to deep brown or black. These differences, once attributed to subspeciation, are now thought to be primarily due to the different environments these bears inhabit, particularly with regard to diet and temperature. The grizzly has a large hump over the shoulders which is a muscle mass used to power the forelimbs in digging. The head is large and round with a concave facial profile. In spite of their massive size, these bears can run at speeds of up to 35mph.

The current range of the grizzly bear extends from Alaska, south through much of Western Canada, and into portions of the Northwestern United States including Idaho, Montana and Wyoming, extending as far south as Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks. Its original range also included much of the Great Plains and the Southwestern states, but it has been extirpated in most of those areas. The grizzly currently enjoys legal protection in the United States. There are currently about 60,000 wild grizzly bears currently located throughout North America.

The Red-tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) is a large bird of prey which breeds from western Alaska and northern Canada to Panama and the West Indies. The construction of highways with treeless medians and shoulders and with utility poles alongside provided perfect habitat for perch-hunting, so Red-tailed Hawks are now a common sight along highways. Finally, these birds have moved into New York and other U.S. cities, as in the successful non-fiction book Red-Tails in Love: A Wildlife Drama in Central Park, by Marie Winn. Winn wrote about one of the most famous of them, Pale Male. This is one of three species colloquially known in the United States as the "chickenhawk."

Extremely broad and stout, males generally weigh between 1.8-2.4 pounds and measure 45–56 cm. Birds of this species have a dark mark along the leading edge of the underwing, between the body and the wrist (the patagium). Most, but not all color variations have a dark band across the belly. The Light adult's breast is pale while the Light juvenile's breast is a whitish color. Light morphs have a white V ranging from its back to its wings. In most, the adults' tails are rusty red above, and juveniles have narrow brown and pale bands.

Red-tailed Hawks prefer to wait on a certain perch and swoop down on prey; though they will also patrol open areas in flight. They mainly eat small mammals, birds and reptiles. In flight, these hawks soar with wings in a slight dihedral, flapping as little as possible.

The Javan Lutung (Trachypithecus auratus), also known as the Ebony Lutung, Ebony Langur and Javan Langur, is an Old World monkey from the Colobinae subfamily. It is normally glossy black with a brownish tinge to its legs, sides, and "sideburns". It is found and endemic to the island of Java, as well as on several of the surrounding Indonesian islands. One population in eastern Java has reddish brown fur like some of those picture here.

Like all langurs, this species' tail is noticeably long, measuring up to 87 cm in length while the body is only around 55 cm long. The Javan Lutung inhabits the interior and peripheral areas of rainforests. This primate is diurnal and arboreal, and its diet is primarily herbivorous. Like other langurs, the Javan Lutung is a social animal, living in groups of around seven, with one or two adult males in the group.

The Reticulated Python (Python reticulatus), with a maximum recorded length 33 feet, is the longest existing snake species. However, it is slender and usually half as heavy as the Green Anaconda.

The reticulated pythons has complex multi-colored geometric pattern. The back typically has a series of irregular diamond shapes which are flanked by smaller markings with light centers. This species has a wide distribution, variations of size, color, and markings. Two subspecies currently exist,

Attacks are rare, but the species has been responsible for several human fatalities in both the wild and captivity. Those who work with with reticulated pythons often cite an unusual level of intelligence and awareness compared to other species.

The Giant Tree Frog (Litoria infrafrenata), also known as the White-lipped Tree Frog, is the largest of all tree frogs. This species is native to the rainforests of New Guinea and northern Australia.

Reaching lengths of over 13cm (5 inches), the Giant Tree Frog can make a standing jump 15 times its body length. That's comparable to a human's broad jump of about 40 feet. Its dorsal surface is usually bright green, although the colour changes depending on the temperature and background, and can be brown. The ventral surface is off-white. The lower lip has a distinctive white stripe (giving this species its name) which continues to the shoulder. There are white stripes on the trailing edges of the lower leg, which may turn pink in the breeding male. The White-lipped Tree Frog has large toe pads, which aid it to climb. The toes are completely webbed, and the hands partially webbed.

NYC - Brooklyn: Prospect Park Zoo - Hamadryas Baboon

The Hamadryas Baboon (Papio hamadryas) is a baboon from the Old World monkey family. The northernmost of all the baboons, their range extends from the Red Sea in Egypt to Eritrea, Ethiopia and Somalia. They can also be found on the Arabian peninsula, though it is uncertain if this population was introduced by humans or not. The Hamadryas Baboon was a sacred animal to the ancient Egyptians as the attendant of Thoth, and so, is also called the Sacred Baboon.

Males are often twice as large as females, and this species shows sexual dimorphism in coloration. Males are silver-white colored and have a pronounced mane, while the females are maneless and brown. The face is colored red. A female initiates mating by presenting her swollen rump to the male.

The Hamadryas Baboon lives in semi-desert areas, savannahs and rocky areas. It lives together in groups (so-called Harems) of Alpha males and up to 15 females which the males lead and guard.

The loss of its habitat by transformation in field and pastureland represents the main threat of the Hamadryas Baboon, its natural enemies (leopards and lions) having been nearly exterminated in their range. IUCN lists it as near threatened.

Today I went to the Nature Aid Center (Natuurhulpcentrum in Dutch) in Opglabbeek. Unfortunately, the most animals aren't photogenic, except the above one. Unfortunately I forget what the name of this animal actually is. Someone an idea?

One of the three majestic white tigers, at the famous Singapore Zoo, wades through the pool to cool off on a warm and humid day.

It was the feeling of awe that I experienced when I saw these tigers at the Singapore Zoo. Being a model of the "open zoo" concept, one can see these majestic animals move around in large "natural" areas... as opposed to seeing weakened animals lie listlessly in cramped cages in older zoos like the one in Mumbai.

NYC - Prospect Park Zoo: California Sea Lion

The California Sea Lion (Zalophus californianus) is a coastal sea lion of the northern Pacific Ocean. Possessing of a streamlined body with a layer of blubber under the skin to provide warmth and buoyancy, males can nonetheless grow up to 600 pounds and 8 feet long. As a marine mammal, they are equally adept in water as they are on land. California Sea Lions feed on a wide-variety of seafood including fish, shellfish, and squid. They are highly sociable and gather in large numbers on beaches and coasts.

Their large eyes help them adjust to low levels of light in underwater environments, while their whiskers augment their sense of touch. Their nostrils automatically close once they hit the water. Their long front flippers rotate outward for better movement on land, and propel them forward in water. Males grow a large crest of bone on the top of their heads as they reach sexual maturity, and it is this that gives the animal its generic name (loph is "forehead" and za- is an emphatic; Zalophus californianus means "Californian big-head").
