CAMP HUMPHREYS — Dog lovers here gathered for Pet Fest 2012 at the Humphreys Veterinary Clinic May 5. The event featured the paws walk, a pet show, face painting, an agility course, pet photos, informational booths, a military working dog demonstration and an awards ceremony.

The Great Hall
These are the actual main doors to the Great Hall, surrounded with stone statues and carvings. Walking through into the Great Hall we are told that we were now walking on the actual stone floor used in the films and seeing the actual tables where the actors ate their feasts. Dummies down each side of the hall wear the actual house costumes that were used in the films: Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, Gryffindor and Slytherin and not forgetting Moaning Myrtle. At the far end of the hall is the teachers table area, with more amazing costumes worn by Professors Dumbledore, Snape, McGonagall, Moody, Trelawney and Flitwick as well as Hagrid and Filch. Each of the Great Hall torch holders is a carving of one of the four house animals.

The House Point Counter
Though it was rarely seen on screen, prop makers are especially proud of the house point counter, which contains thousands of glass beads.

The Owl Podium
The podium used by Professor Dumbledore is covered in real gold and years of melted wax.

People the world-over have been enchanted by the Harry Potter films for nearly a decade. The wonderful special effects and amazing creatures have made this iconic series beloved to both young and old - and now, for the first time, the doors are going to be opened for everyone at the studio where it first began. You'll have the chance to go behind-the-scenes and see many things the camera never showed. From breathtakingly detailed sets to stunning costumes, props and animatronics, Warner Bros. Studio Tour London provides a unique showcase of the extraordinary British artistry, technology and talent that went into making the most successful film series of all time. Secrets will be revealed.

Warner Bros. Studio Tour London provides an amazing new opportunity to explore the magic of the Harry Potter films - the most successful film series of all time. This unique walking tour takes you behind-the-scenes and showcases a huge array of beautiful sets, costumes and props. It also reveals some closely guarded secrets, including facts about the special effects and animatronics that made these films so hugely popular all over the world.

Here are just some of the things you can expect to see and do:
- Step inside and discover the actual Great Hall.
- Explore Dumbledore’s office and discover never-before-seen treasures.
- Step onto the famous cobbles of Diagon Alley, featuring the shop fronts of Ollivanders wand shop, Flourish and Blotts, the Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes, Gringotts Wizarding Bank and Eeylops Owl Emporium.
- See iconic props from the films, including Harry’s Nimbus 2000 and Hagrid’s motorcycle.
- Learn how creatures were brought to life with green screen effects, animatronics and life-sized models.
- Rediscover other memorable sets from the film series, including the Gryffindor common room, the boys’ dormitory, Hagrid’s hut, Potion’s classroom and Professor Umbridge’s office at the Ministry of Magic.

Located just 20 miles from the heart of London at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden, the very place where it all began and where all eight of the Harry Potter films were brought to life. The Studio Tour is accessible to everyone and promises to be a truly memorable experience - whether you’re an avid Harry Potter fan, an all-round movie buff or you just want to try something that’s a little bit different.

The tour is estimated to take approximately three hours (I was in there for 5 hours!), however, as the tour is mostly self guided, you are free to explore the attraction at your own pace. During this time you will be able to see many of the best-loved sets and exhibits from the films. Unique and precious items from the films will also be on display, alongside some exciting hands-on interactive exhibits that will make you feel like you’re actually there.

The magic also continues in the Gift Shop, which is full of exciting souvenirs and official merchandise, designed to create an everlasting memory of your day at Warner Bros. Studio Tour London.

Hogwarts Castle Model - Get a 360 degree view of the incredible, hand sculpted 1:24 scale construction that features within the Studio Tour. The Hogwarts castle model is the jewel of the Art Department having been built for the first film, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. It took 86 artists and crew members to construct the first version which was then rebuilt and altered many times over for the next seven films. The work was so extensive that if one was to add all the man hours that have gone into building and reworking the model, it would come to over 74 years. The model was used for aerial photography, and was digitally scanned for CGI scenes.

The model, which sits at nearly 50 feet in diameter, has over 2,500 fibre optic lights that simulate lanterns and torches and even gave the illusion of students passing through hallways in the films. To show off the lighting to full effect a day-to-night cycle will take place every four minutes so you can experience its full beauty.

An amazing amount of detail went into the making of the model: all the doors are hinged, real plants are used for landscaping and miniature birds are housed in the Owlery. To make the model appear even more realistic, artists rebuilt miniature versions of the courtyards from Alnwick Castle and Durham Cathedral, where scenes from Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone were shot.

Circle of Animals / Zodiac Heads, an outdoor sculptural exhibition by Chinese sculptor Ai Weiwei (艾未未), was on exhibit at the Pulitzer Fountain at Grand Army Plaza in Central Park from May 2 to July 15, 2011. Weiwei reinterpreted the twelve bronze animal heads representing the traditional Chinese zodiac that once adorned the famed fountain-clock, designed in the 18th century by two European Jesuits serving in the court of the Qing dynasty Emperor Qianlong, that was ited in the European-style gardens of the Yuanming Yuan, an imperial retreat in Beijing. In 1860, the Yuanming Yuan was ransacked by French and British troops, and the heads were pillaged.

The exhibition earned notoriety for events beyond the art realm. Weiwei is an outspoken political activist who has been highly and critical of the Chinese Government's stance on democracy and human rights. Following an arrest at Beijing airport on April 3, he was held for over two months, through the exhibition's opening, without any official charges being filed. Allegations were made about "economic crimes", but ultimately he was released on June 22.

The harvest mouse (Micromys minutus) is the smallest rodent in Britain weighing just 6 grams which is about the same as a twenty pence coin. This mouse wasn't given a common name until the 18th century for the simple reason that it hadn’t been discovered until then. the name harvest mouse originated from the fact that it was usually only commonly seen when crops were harvested and the mice disturbed.

The Piedras Blancas rookery, on Highway 1 seven miles north of San Simeon on the California Central Coast, is home to about 17,000 animals. Because the tide was very high at ~ 5.5’ this morning, the elephant seals were especially crowded into this narrow swath of beach. (10 images in this set)

Photographing the Northern Elephant Seals (M. angustirostris) at Sunrise. Sat, Jan. 26, 2013, on a slightly foggy day that turned into a beautiful sunny experience. Mating, giving birth, fighting, yelling and squealing, and vying for very limited beach space, this Elephant Seal display is a must-see phenomenon, especially during the months of December, January, and February.
A Photomorrobay Meet-up. See photomorrobay.com and tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/photomorrobay/ and www.flickr.com/groups/photomorrobay/ for more information.
Shooting starts at 6:50 AM. Optional carpools to the San Simeon Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal Overlook 34 miles north of Morro Bay, leave the Morro Bay Azure Street Morro Strand State Beach parking lot at 6:09 AM sharp arriving by 6:50 AM when the best shooting starts. A 9:20 AM high-tide brings the Alpha Male battles and mating scenes closer to the boardwalk thanusual. The best photos come from before 9:00 AM as early light can be very important here. Our past successful outings have been held between the dates of Jan. 22 - Feb. 2.

Use a tripod, and a lens reaching out to say 200mm to 300mm. 70-200 would be nice. There is a railing for handheld brace-shooting. Everyone welcome. No instruction.

See Friends of the Elephant Seal's www.elephantseal.org/ for more information. No restrooms at the site. Brunch usually happens on the return in informal groups at Cambria Main Street Grill, or in today’s case, the Cavalier Restaurant in San Simeon. Wiki en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northern_elephant_seal says “The northern elephant seal (Mirounga angustirostris) is one of two species of elephant seal (the other is the southern elephant seal). It is a member of the family Phocidae ("true seals"). Elephant seals derive their name from their great size and from the male's large proboscis, which is used in making extraordinarily loud roaring noises, especially during the mating competition. Sexual dimorphism in size is great: The males can grow to 14 ft (4 m) and 5,000 lb (2,300 kg), while the females grow to 11 ft (3 m) and 1,400 lb (640 kg). Correspondingly, the mating system is highly polygynous; a successful male is able to impregnate up to 50 females in one season.”

This is one of the kangaroos used in the animal show. I was in the right place at the right time when he was being walked back to his habitat. Very curious about everything and jumped right up to me to say hello (seriously, animals and little kids do this to me all the time - it's kinda freaky). His caretaker is offering him some food to coax him back. Poor little fella had a cataract in his right eye but was extremely cute... in a kangaroo kind of way. :-)

The boy is not going to do that - is he? - Did he tell the others he was going to pee on the stage floor

In the Christmas photo, most of the children seem to have their attention on one boy, and an area on the floor by his feet.
----------------------------
If the staff guessed that we were up to some fun, some might go ahead and allow us to do it, taking time to take a photograph rather than stopping the matter immediately, in the mid 1960s it was now more about our 'free' development than total control of us.

In the Children's Home, if you were naughty, you might as well be very naughty.
There was little difference in the punishments. I think a few of the staff even lessened our punishments if we managed to do something a bit different to the normal style of our wrong doings.

During one of the organised play sessions with the adults in control, we had to take an object and make a play scene out of it.
One of the items was a small waste paper bin, after the many hats and other ideas, one of the boys in my group, took the bin, walked into the middle of the hall. Then he pulled his shorts and pants down and sat on the bin, announcing "Sister - Can you wipe my Bot - Bot please".
The odd frown from a few of the adults, but laughter from everyone else. He did not get any punishment.

“We are really happy with the turnout and excited to be a part of the Camp Humphreys community,” said Capt. Amy Carlson, officer in charge at the Humphreys vet clinic. “We have many events such as face painting, doggy treats and grooming. Humphreys has been great to us and we have received lots of support. We look forward to continuing events like this today.”

The American Red Cross participated in the event to offer knowledge about pet first aid, while the Osan Animal Shelter provided information on pet adoptions.

The dog show had categories such as owner/pet lookalike, best dressed, best pet trick and best in show. Rocko, owned by Blair Bogle, was the biggest winner of the day, winning first prizes in owner/pet lookalike and best in show categories.

“This is a great opportunity to hang out with dog lovers and people with the same hobbies,” said pet owner Tom Stout. “This event also provided information for people who are PCS’ing and have pets with them. This was a fun day.”

Just look at his antennae and his bearing and you will agree: He is so sad! What may have happened to him? Did his girlfriend leave him? Did he lose his job? Or was he just fed up with a big black thing hunting him and throwing light at him?

This hopper was found on the strawberry plants in our garden - just to give you an idea of the size, this is one of the blooms of this strawberry. About a centimeter in diameter.

classy blinds - garbage bags scotch-taped to the window. You see, there's no sense in paying for real blinds, when there's always a chance we may have to take it down. best to wait until things are done. Talk about ghetto. The window on the left uses boards, at least. Classy.

corpse smell - read about it HERE.
It's mostly gone. Pulling up the unfinished floorboards and lifting up the insulation (thus leaving only a millimeter-thick vapor barrier sheet of plastic between us, and the earth below -- piers, no concrete foundation) helped. Opening the windows and having a fan pointed out for a week or so helped. But I couldn't stand the lack of privacy.

Misfit, meanwhile, is just acting weird.

Pat & Jim

Meet Pat (as in Patricia) and Jim. They have moved into a "fixer upper" near the University. It's in a great neighborhood overall but it's sort of on the fringes. A little bit one way or the other and they are on the wrong side of the tracks so to speak.

Seriously then... I've not seen this roosting platform occupied in the past. In part because it is right on a road. Set back less than 4 feet from the road edge in fact. This shot is about as close as I can get to them on foot without disturbing them (though Pat has alerted and is giving me a stern look) . I won't be shooting them from this location again between her alerting to me and the powerlines (which are across the road from their roost.)

There is lots of marsh and brackish, tidally-flushed water right nearby (both sides of the road) and it's only a 1 minute commute to the open sound. No other roosts for about a mile around...so in many ways a great location (nearby golf course too!) If only the cars, joggers and bicycles would bug off. Oh well. Can't have it all, and it is a fixer upper for a young couple.

I'm not sure if this roost will make it through the season, or if they will pack it up and move to a different location. Either way at the end of the season I am going to see about having it moved further into the marsh away from the road (about 30' away and screened from the road by trees and bushes. For as long as they do maintain this roost I will bring one picture a week of Pat & Jim and their adventures to make this fixer upper work at "Nest K"

It's as I stepped off the plane in Narita airport yesterday when in fact, 5 years have passed. With my thesis and presentation over, I'm still figuring out what to do in my last month in Japan.

Lion (Panthera leo)

The lion is one of the four big cats in the genus Panthera, and a member of the family Felidae. With some males exceeding 250 kg (550 lb) in weight, it is the second-largest living cat after the tiger. Wild lions currently exist in Sub-Saharan Africa and in Asia with an endangered remnant population in Gir Forest National Park in India, having disappeared from North Africa and Southwest Asia in historic times. Until the late Pleistocene, about 10,000 years ago, the lion was the most widespread large land mammal after humans. They were found in most of Africa, across Eurasia from western Europe to India, and in the Americas from the Yukon to Peru. The lion is a vulnerable species, having seen a possibly irreversible population decline of thirty to fifty percent over the past two decades in its African range. Lion populations are untenable outside designated reserves and national parks. Although the cause of the decline is not fully understood, habitat loss and conflicts with humans are currently the greatest causes of concern. - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lion
