Kalanchoe delagoensis is a succulent plant native to Madagascar. In common with the other members of the Bryophyllum section of the genus Kalanchoe, K. delagoensis is notable for vegetatively growing small plantlets on the fringes of its leaves, leading to its common names of mother of thousands and mother of millions. Chandelier plant is an alternative common name.
The plant's capability for vegetative reproduction, its resistance to drought, and its popularity as a garden plant, have allowed the plant to become an invasive weed in places such as eastern Australia and many Pacific islands. In the Neotropics it even gets pollinated by hummingbirds on occasion[1].
As well as displacing native plants, K. delagoensis is also unwelcome because it contains bufadienolide cardiac glycosides[2] which can cause cardiac poisoning, particularly in grazing animals[3]. During 1997, 125 head of cattle died after eating mother-of-millions on a travelling stock reserve near Moree, NSW.

Belle Haven Raft of Birds

Raft full of birds on the Potomac River, off Belle Haven Marina, just south of Alexandria, Virginia. Most of them are Ring-billed Gulls (Larus delawarensis) but I see one Great Black-backed Gull (Larus marinus), a Double-crested Cormorant (Phalacrocorax auritus), and what looks like an American Crow (Corvus brachyrhynchos), though it would be cool if it was a Fish Crow (Corvus ossifragus). The plastic owl clearly isn't doing a very good job of frightening off the birds!

I know, I did a crappy job with the exposure settings for this shot. Oh well, adrenaline will do that to ya every now and then. I was shocked, however, at just how calm this deer was with my presence. I shot a whole series of pictures with this deer and never once felt like I was getting within his "comfort zone." Living in Montana I'm so used to preventing one of these animals from introducing himself to my truck bumper that I forget just how beautiful they are.

The Kangaroo Family
Kangaroos, and their close relatives, vary greatly in size, ranging in weight from 500 grams to 90 kilograms. There are at least 69 different types (called species) of kangaroo. These species are found naturally in the wild only in Australia and New Guinea, although feral populations of some species have been introduced in New Zealand, Great Britain and Hawaii.

Recently, scientists have separated these species into two families (the Macropodidae and the Potoroidae) which together form a super-family known as the Macropodoidea (or macropods). The family Macropodidae includes kangaroos, wallabies, wallaroos, pademelons, tree-kangaroos and the forest wallabies of New Guinea. The family Potoroidae is made up of potoroos, rat-kangaroos and bettongs which are only found in Australia.

The best-known macropods are kangaroos, which is why the word 'kangaroo' is often used to describe any of the members of this family. We use 'kangaroos' in this text whenever these animals are being discussed in general.

Getting Around
Kangaroos of all sizes have one thing in common - powerful back legs with long feet. They are distinguished from other animals by the way they hop on these strong back legs. Only a few other small mammals, such as hopping mice, do this.

Hopping uses slightly less energy than four-footed running, but this advantage is lost at low speed. To move slowly, kangaroos balance on their front paws and tail, and then swing their hind legs forward in a pendulum motion.

One of the many odd things about kangaroos is that, on land, they can only move their hind feet together but when swimming they can kick each leg independently. Tree-kangaroos can move each hind leg separately when climbing. It is also interesting to note that, while several species of kangaroos have tails that can wrap around and carry nesting material such as grass and small branches, not one of the tree-kangaroos has the ability to grasp branches with its tail.

Jig fishing for tarpon is not exclusive to Boca Grande Pass. Jig fishing with breakaway gear for tarpon reportedly originated in Louisiana. One such jig, termed a “Coon Pop,” was created by Lance “Coon Pop” Shouest. The rig consists of a large circle hook attached to weighted lure via a piece of wire meant to break off when a tarpon is hooked. This type of breakaway gear was employed to prevent a tarpon from using the heavy lure to gain additional leverage to throw the hook during the fight. The lures are trolled (fishing five rods or more) using heavy conventional fishing gear. Another method is that when a school of tarpon is spotted, the boat is allowed to drift while anglers cast the lures at the school. Other fishermen that fish in the area have created their own jigs (e.g., the Argo Pop by Capt. Ross Barkhurst), or make their own.

Louisiana tarpon anglers usually fish an area of open water called the “Tarpon Triangle,” which is bounded by the Southwest Pass, Empire Canal, and Grand Bayou in 20-100 feet of water. The “triangle” is formed by the West Delta Oil Platforms 27, 58, and 61. Fish are also found around the mud lumps off Southwest Pass.

Whale Rescue Burleigh Heads
Out taking some morning photo’s, when I notice a baby whale caught in the Shark nets off Burleigh Heads. I rang the police who get the Queensland Primary Industries and Fisheries who are in charge of the net to start the rescue. The men and woman from the Fisheries and Sea World did a fantastic job in freeing the entangled baby whale. They where two very large whales (the mother and escort???) swimming around the baby and staying very close while the rescue was performed. (by a very experience whale rescue team) ....."The sooner we know that we have an entanglement, the better chance we have of a successful release," he said.

www.goldcoast.com.au/article/2009/10/13/147631_gold-coast...
Queensland Shark Control Program Manager Tony Ham said public assistance was needed with reporting suspected entanglements.
"Anyone who sees a whale or other marine life entangled in shark control equipment can call the 24-hour hotline on 1800 806 891.

"With a significant increase in the whale population - approximately 12,000 now migrating each season - entanglements are anticipated at this time of year as the population makes its journey back to southern waters," Mr Ham said.

Including today's entanglement, since 2000 28 whales have been caught in shark control equipment in Queensland.

Of these entanglements, 25 whales have been successfully released...Congratulation to all.........
