One of the three majestic white tigers, at the famous Singapore Zoo, wades through the pool to cool off on a warm and humid day.

It was the feeling of awe that I experienced when I saw these tigers at the Singapore Zoo. Being a model of the "open zoo" concept, one can see these majestic animals move around in large "natural" areas... as opposed to seeing weakened animals lie listlessly in cramped cages in older zoos like the one in Mumbai.

This photo does a good job at expressing some of the mixed feelings over having animals in captivity. I appreciate the work of conservation and education that our zoos do, but sometimes you see these beautiful intelligent animals such as this gorilla and you can see in their face the sadness of captivity.

Don't you f*cking touch me with that shit

You have to look closely to see his 'killer eyes', but they're there. Cats often pretend to be asleep. But nothing goes on without a cat knowing, trust me. They KNOW.

After our other cat Eric died, he left us his legacy of fleas -- lots of damn fleas. We're only now getting around to purging the carpets.

I wanted to spray Monaco -- the cat you see here -- but apparently you're not meant to use it on animals... as it's poisonous... lame.

He's a beautiful cat, but because I don't like him much, you haven't seen any photos of him. But he's the only cat we have now... so I'll try to show you a little more of his delicious and silky Henry VIIIesque fatness in the weeks to come.

Gato

The domestic cat (Felis catus or Felis silvestris catus) is a small, usually furry, domesticated, carnivorous mammal. It is often called the housecat, or simply the cat when there is no need to distinguish it from other felids and felines. Cats are valued by humans for companionship and ability to hunt vermin and household pests.

Cats are similar in anatomy to the other felids, with strong, flexible bodies, quick reflexes, sharp retractable claws, and teeth adapted to killing small prey. As crepuscular predators, cats use their acute hearing and ability to see in near darkness to locate prey. Not only can cats hear sounds too faint for human ears, they can also hear sounds higher in frequency than humans can perceive. This is because the usual prey of cats (particularly rodents such as mice) make high frequency noises, so the hearing of the cat has evolved to pinpoint these faint high-pitched sounds. Cats also have a much better sense of smell than humans.

Despite being solitary hunters, cats are a social species, and cat communication includes the use of a variety of vocalizations (meowing, purring, trilling, hissing, growling and grunting) as well as pheromones and types of cat-specific body language.

Cats have a rapid breeding rate. Under controlled breeding, they can be bred and shown as registered pedigree pets, a hobby known as cat fancy. Failure to control the breeding of pet cats by spaying and neutering and the abandonment of former household pets has resulted in large numbers of feral cats worldwide, with a population of up to 60 million of these animals in the United States alone.

Since cats were cult animals in ancient Egypt, it was commonly believed to have been domesticated there, but there may have been instances of domestication as early as the Neolithic. A genetic study in 2007 revealed that all house cats are descended from as few as five female African Wildcats (Felis silvestris lybica) c. 8000 BCE, in the Middle East.Cats are currently the most popular pet in the world, now found almost everywhere in the

A Disney Tale of the Savanna - Environ (Jambo House at Animal Kingdom Lodge)
animal plant
This is a Disney Tale of the Savanna:

ENVIRON
Before the coming of the animals, the plants raced to claim the best soil in the savanna. The quick grasses grew first. But, in time, they were pushed aside by the thick roots of the bushes. Yet, the bushes could not hold back the trees. And, so it went, until only the trees remained. The clouds overhead, angered by the greed of the trees, struck them with bolts of lightning causing great fires and clearing the land so the grasses and bushes could return. And, to this day, whenever the trees grow too bold, the lightning returns to make things on the savanna even again.

A Disney tale of the Savanna.

Seminole Canyon State Park, Val Verde County, Texas. One of the more remote state parks, tucked into the southwest corner of Texas about an hour's drive west of Del Rio.

This area has been inhabited since the very earliest days that humans set foot in North America, going back nearly 12,000 years - back during the last Ice Age when the land was more verdant with now-extinct animals still roaming the surrounding prairies and forest. But over the millenia, the climate changed to its current, arid desert landscape - and the Indians adapted.

All through these years, the local Indians drew pictograms all over the surrounding canyon walls and caves. In the dry climate, protected by overhanging rock walls, many of these pictograms survived through the ages. Some of the more famous sites, such as the Fate Bell and Panther Cave, are the feature attractions of Seminole Canyon, and can be visited by guided tour through the park.

However, I have not yet visited these sites - instead focusing on other areas of the park. On the first visit (March 9th, 2008), I arrived after the park had closed for the day. I walked along the short 'Windmill Trail', a small loop near the visitor's center. This trail leads down to a small year-round spring and the ruins of a water catchment system that was used by local settlers over the past hundred years.

The return trip (September 27, 2008) was much more fruitful - I chose to hike the Rio Grande River Trail, a six-mile out-and-back loop that leads to the far corner of the park, almost a stone's throw from Old Mexico. With recent rains it was fairly lively and green, with countless butterflies passing through on their annual migration. The trail starts alongside the original 'Loop Trail', the 1882 railroad alignment that was abandoned a decade later when a less strenuous route was forged and the Pecos River High Bridge was built.

The trail itself is pretty boring - a flat, featureless hike across a nondescript desert plain. But the main highlight of the hike quickly comes into view. There is a mile-long spur shooting off to the left called the Pressa Trail, which leads to an overlook looking down at a three-way intersection in the Seminole Canyon below. Here, the waters from Lake Amistad many miles away along the Rio Grande peter out; to the right, the waters are wide and deep, muddied from the recent rainstorms. To the left, the two forks of Seminole Canyon are mostly dry. From the top of the overlook, sheer cliffs lead staight down over a hundred feet to the waters below. The view is, well, *breathtaking* - and worth the trip.

Back on the main trail, a few miles later it comes to an abrupt end at the junction where Seminole Canyon merges with the Rio Grande. The location overlooks the Panther Cave pictograms, on the opposite shore far below, accessible only by boat. To the right, a few hundred yards away, are the hills of Mexico. Here, the water is deeper, the canyons steeper, the chasm wider. An impressive view, although not as amazing as the Pressa Trail overlook.

From here, it is a straight hike back along the south portion of the loop, my only companion a great horned toad trying to hide in the gravel of the trail. I would like to return to this park to take the guided tours, and there are other tours available nearby on private land to other pictogram sites as well. And I am told this park is also fabulous for bird watchers as well.
