A new species for me. I had known about this species, but had never photographed one, and as soon as I saw this guy I knew exactly what he was.

Unfortunately, he was missing his front left leg. Regardless of his missing leg, he made his away around pretty well and was still just as difficult to photograph as most spiders. He didn't seem to be impaired in any way.

His chelicerae are almost completely covered in that white hair. The coloring and markings on this species are really attractive. The front arms are enormous like those on Hentzia palmarum (a much more common species around here).

Bryozoans
animal species
I've been seeing a lot of the gelatenous blobs at the Noxubee Refuge lately, and had just assumed that they were some sort of egg cluster.

However, after doing a bit of research, I found that they are bryozoans (most likely Pectinatella magnifica). They are actually colonies of small animals called zooids. Most of the species in this class are marine, but this is one of a small handful of fresh-water species.

Here's a page with more information on them:

Bighorn lamb
animal species
Observed near the township of Waterton in Waterton - Glacier National park. This young Ovis canadensis is quite well camoflauged against the background.
Two centuries ago, an estimated 1.5 million to 2 million bighorn sheep lived in North America; today, a mere 28,000 remain. Diseases caught from domestic sheep, competition from livestock for forage, and trophy hunting for their horns caused populations to plummet. Bighorns graze in mountain meadows, habitat that is being lost to expanding forests, which are growing beyond their historic boundaries in part because the wildfires that used to hold them in check have been suppressed. Glacier National Park, home to 400 to 600 bighorn sheep, lists the animal as a "species of concern," that is, at risk of becoming endangered.

Subject: Hellooo, Down There..! :: Rose-breasted Grosbeak Male (Pheucticus ludovicianus, LC)
Camera: Kodak Z740 Zoom
Date: 2010.10.13 (fall)
Location: Talking Rock, Pickens County, North Georgia, USA

Anecdote :: This is where not always taking notes hurts, especially with respect to degenerating cognition.. Well, that or there are just SO many birds coming and going anymore, it's getting really hard to keep track..

In this case, am not quite sure now of the exact timing of the Rose-breasted Grosbeaks first showing in this yard.. *Think* it was a year and a half ago during Fall.. It was five (5) males eating sunflower seeds on the walkway by the porch.. Then sometime in Spring I saw this somewhat unidentifiable larger brown job there by herself for a couple of days.. THEN come this last Fall (2010), both arrived together..

Won't even try to guess how many were actually here this past Fall, but it was *several* that came and went in spurts as migratory season heated up.. If Memory serves anything (and without checking my notes), it was somewhere in the vicinity of 20+..

Between all the comings and goings, they were here for about a month with maybe two, three days during that time where I didn't see any at all.. The reason I could tell there were several groups was both the changes in female eating preferences and extremely varied degree of red on all the males, young and old.. The two variables, the eating habits and the coloration, would change at the same time over the month's period..

The shot here was by accident as I was trying to catch this guy's back for coloring.. When my horse passed away, just simply could not bring myself to part with her last feeding bowl.. Was a good CHOICE as it makes for a great impromptu platform feeder as needed.. The Grosbeaks spent a LOT of time in and on it while they were here..

PS.. Am looking at the dispersal map on Cornell Lab's All About Birds.. *Looks like* I am RIGHT smack on the VERY, VERY southern edge of their southeastern summer breeding range.. Here's hoping the little guys and gals remember where they dined a-plenty last Fall.. *grin*

Cool Animal Planet images

A few nice animal planet images I found:

NYC - Prospect Park Zoo: California Sea Lion
animal planet
The California Sea Lion (Zalophus californianus) is a coastal sea lion of the northern Pacific Ocean. Possessing of a streamlined body with a layer of blubber under the skin to provide warmth and buoyancy, males can nonetheless grow up to 600 pounds and 8 feet long. As a marine mammal, they are equally adept in water as they are on land. California Sea Lions feed on a wide-variety of seafood including fish, shellfish, and squid. They are highly sociable and gather in large numbers on beaches and coasts.

Their large eyes help them adjust to low levels of light in underwater environments, while their whiskers augment their sense of touch. Their nostrils automatically close once they hit the water. Their long front flippers rotate outward for better movement on land, and propel them forward in water. Males grow a large crest of bone on the top of their heads as they reach sexual maturity, and it is this that gives the animal its generic name (loph is "forehead" and za- is an emphatic; Zalophus californianus means "Californian big-head").

**
The Prospect Park Zoo, Brooklyn's only Zoo, is home to nearly 400 animals of more than 80 species. First established as a small menagerie in Prospect Park in the late 1800's, this collection of animals became the more formal Prospect Park Zoo on Flatbush Avenue that opened to the public on July 3, 1935. A Works Progress Administration (WPA) project, the Zoo was part of a massive city-wide park improvement program initiated and executed by former Parks Commissioner Robert Moses. Closed in 1988 for a five year, million dollar renovation program, the zoo was completely replaced save for the exteriors of the 1930's-era buildings. Rededicated on October 5, 1993, it joined Wildlife Conservation Society's (WCS) world-renowned network of wildlife parks in New York City.

Facts about pelicans:

There are more than half a dozen species of pelicans, but all of them have the famous throat pouch for which the birds are best known. These large birds use their elastic pouches to catch fish—though different species use it in different ways.

Many pelicans fish by swimming in cooperative groups. They may form a line or a "U" shape and drive fish into shallow water by beating their wings on the surface. When fish congregate in the shallows, the pelicans simply scoop them up. The brown pelican, on the other hand, dives on fish (usually a type of herring called menhaden) from above and snares them in its bill. Pelicans do not store fish in their pouch, but simply use it to catch them and then tip it back to drain out water and swallow the fish immediately. The American white pelican can hold some 3 gallons (11 1/2 liters) of water in its bill. Young pelicans feed by sticking their bills into their parents' throats to retrieve food.

Pelicans are found on many of the world's coastlines and also along lakes and rivers. They are social birds and typically travel in flocks, often strung out in a line. They also breed in groups called colonies, which typically gather on islands.

In North America, the brown pelican is endangered, but populations are recovering to some extent. The sea birds were devastated by chemical pesticides, such as DDT, which damaged the eggs of pelicans and many other species.

These were shot in Vedanthangal, Tamilnadu when i went for a walk with the "Photographic Society Of Madras"

Some info about Vedanthangal:

Vedanthangal Lake Bird Sanctuary is a 30-hectare (74-acre) sanctuary located in the Kancheepuram District of the state of Tamil Nadu, India. The sanctuary is about 75 kilometres (47 mi) from Chennai on National Highway 45 (NH45) south of Chengalpattu.

Vedanthangal is a home for many migratory birds, such as pintail, garganey, grey wagtail, blue-winged teal, common sandpiper and some more.

Vedanthangal is at around one and half hour journey from Chennai. It is one of the oldest water bird sanctuaries in the country. Vedanthangal in Tamil language means 'hamlet of the hunter. This area was a favourite hunting spot for the local landlords 301 years ago. The region attracted a variety of birds because it was dotted with small lakes that acted as feeding grounds for the birds. Realising its ornithological importance, the British government undertook steps to develop Vedanthangal into a bird sanctuary as early as 1798. This was established in 1858 by the order of the Collector of Chingleput District.

The best time to visit this sanctuary is from November to March. During this time birds are mostly busy in building and maintaining their nests.Villagers near this sanctuary are very concerned about the Sanctuary and the birds coming to this sanctuary, and they have taken many serious steps to avoid disturbance to the flow of birds.
